Getting Back in Tune: The Sacred Pause of Stillness

My wife has heard this over and over. We will be together in a worship service or a concert, and I’ll hear it.
Something is out of tune. It’s probably the guitar. And I’ll say something like…’it just takes a minute to get that solved.’
When one instrument, one piece of the ensemble is out of tune, the whole band suffers. The whole thing is less than what it could be.
Have you ever felt like something in your life was out of tune? The music is still happening, life is continuing to be in motion, and something is just off. And, this one piece that’s off throws the whole thing off.
Psalm 46:10 begins with these words, “Be still and know that I am God.”
This is a somewhat strange statement because it’s both a command and an invitation. There are no words like…’it might be a good idea’ or ‘I think you should’. No…it commands us to be still. It’s a command.
It’s also an invitation.
Can you picture our God, in the most gentle and loving way possible, simply inviting you into His presence?
His arms are stretched out before Him, His hand is making a gentle ‘come be with me’ motion, and His face holds a sincere smile, giving an impression of how much He wants to hang out with you.
And, what is He inviting you to? It’s not to do anything. He’s simply inviting you to be. To hang out. To sit by the campfire with Him and just enjoy being together.
I think an argument can be made here that this may just be what we all need in order to get back in tune. Just like the pause that is necessary to hit the tuner, and get the guitar back into alignment, perhaps a soul pause to be still with God can have the effect we need to keep our lives in tune.
